🌳 Not Everyone in Your Life is Root Material, Sis

In this Melanin Memoirs reflection, we explore the tree of life analogy—leaf people, branch people, and root people. Leaf people may be temporary, yet they often leave us with lessons before they drift away. Branch people can carry us for a season, offering needed support, even if they eventually break under pressure. And then there are the roots—those rare, steady connections that remain solid and unshakeable, no matter how much time or distance passes. This post is a reminder to honor each role, release what’s seasonal, and cherish the ones who hold you steady through every storm. 🌱✨

Life has a way of showing us who people really are. Some folks blow in like a summer breeze, soft and sweet, but gone just as quick. Others seem sturdy at first, holding on until the weight gets too heavy—then they break under pressure. And then there are the rare ones—the roots. The ones who steady you when the storm rages.

🍃 Leaf People

Leaf people are beautiful, but temporary. They bring shade, they flutter, they make things look full—but let the wind blow, and they’re gone. Some people in your life are like that: meant to be enjoyed, but not leaned on. They show up in your highlight reel, but disappear in your valley.

I’ve learned not to resent them, though. Even leaves have their purpose. Some taught me hard truths about myself. Some reminded me of what I will and won’t accept. Others showed me the sweetness of fleeting joy. And when the wind carried them away, I could still carry the lessons they left behind.

🌿 Branch People

Then there are branch people. They look strong, and for a while, they are. You may even feel safe leaning on them. But put too much weight on that branch, and snap. It’s not because they were fake—it’s because they weren’t built for that kind of load.

But even broken branches served a role. Some held me up when I needed support, even if only for a season. Others gave me shade or fruit in a critical moment before they broke away completely. I’ve learned to honor the good they gave without holding bitterness for the way things ended.

🌱 Root People

And then, sis, there are roots. These are the ones who don’t need spotlight or applause. They go deep. You don’t always see them, but you feel them. They hold you steady when life tries to uproot you. They nourish you when you’re too tired to pour into yourself.

Roots are rare, and that’s what makes them precious. They are the prayer warriors, the late-night listeners, the “I’ll show up” folks. They are quiet, solid, unshakeable. And even if time or distance separates us, the connection never fades. When we speak again, it’s like no time has passed at all.

The Moral

Water your roots. Don’t waste time begging leaves to stay or crying over broken branches. Every piece has a purpose: the leaf that brought a lesson, the branch that gave support for a time, and the root that still holds you steady through it all.

Sis, discernment is love in action. Know who’s in your life for a reason, who’s there for a season, and who’s truly there for a lifetime.

✨ Root vibes only.
